2017 SPRING PHILANTHROPY

On Friday, April 7, Kappa Alpha Theta began their annual Spring Philanthropy events. CASA Carnival was held on Friday, followed by Bump, Set, Kite on Sunday, April 9. At CASA Carnival, Theta members prepared soft pretzels, corn dogs, popcorn and cotton candy for Mizzou students in order to raise money for their two beneficiaries, the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation and Heart of Missouri Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

“The philanthropy weekend was so much fun,” said Alissa Hurst, MC ‘16. “We had great participation from all our members and a good turn out for our events. It was amazing seeing everyone come out to support CASA.”

For the first time, CASA Carnival was open from 7:00 p.m. to midnight, with the first hour exclusive to families in the Columbia area.

“CASA Carnival was the perfect opportunity to do this because of all the fun activities that we were able to have for the kids,” said Philanthropy Director Channing Phillips said. “The family fun hour was a huge success, and I plan to incorporate it in our future events.”

Philanthropy director, Channing Phillips, decided to include the family fun hour in order to welcome back alumnae and their families to give them an opportunity to see how the current members are giving back to their community. The invitation was also extended to MizzouThon miracle children, the families of CASA staff and volunteers and the children and families of Russell Elementary, Alpha Mu’s Partner in Education. Activities for children included a ring toss, photo booth, corn hole and face painting.

The success carried through to Bump, Set, Kite on Sunday morning where 14 teams of Mizzou men competed in a sand volleyball tournament. Lambda Chi Alpha took home the winning trophy with the men of Beta Sigma Psi coming in second.
