Meet Lainey Hogg: Our April Leading Woman

Name: Lainey Hogg

Major: Journalism / Strategic Communications

Hometown: St. Louis, MO

What are your career/life goals?

Honestly, I am not totally sure where I want to go after college. Some of the things I am wanting to do are to work for a marketing agency, be on the creative team for a professional sports team or work for a food or travel magazine. However, my number one bucket list item/goal is to take photos of gymnastics at the Olympics!

What is your favorite part about your major and why did you choose it?

I was on the yearbook staff in high school and I fell in love with photography and journalism. I decided I want to continue in college and learn more about the field. My favorite part about the journalism school is how many opportunities you have! I have been able to be involved in job-applicable organizations already in my freshman year, something I did not expect coming to Mizzou.

You were recently named one of this year’s ODK Top 14 Freshmen. Can you tell us a little about this? What is special about this award?

The ODK award is given to the top 14 of the freshman class based on academics, leadership, and overall impact on their community and campus. The cohort is comprised of students from a wide variety of programs, majors and extracurriculars. It is such a special opportunity to collaborate with and learn from everyone.

What organizations or hobbies are you passionate about?

I love all forms of photography! I have recently been interested in film photography in addition to digital. Reminiscing on all the moments taken on a role of film is one of my favorite things! I also take photos for Mizzou Athletics as well as all types of portraits! I love being able to tell stories and capture moments forever.

How have your experiences in Theta changed you?

Being a part of an organization with so many high achieving women has led me to become the best version of myself. I have been given so many opportunities to grow and continue my passions while helping other members and our philanthropy.

What does Theta mean to you?

Theta is a group of supporting and loving women. Theta has created such a welcoming environment. Whether it is just exchanging smiles on the way to class or sitting down to have deep conversations, Thetas will support and uplift you no matter what.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?

Reach out!! For the first week or so of college, I stayed close to my roommates from high school and didn’t branch out too much. I was so nervous to ask people in my class or on my floor to grab lunch or study together. However, I started to text people to see if they want to hang out in the lounge or go eat lunch after class. I made so many of my friends this way! This can also go for jobs, internships, clubs, etc. too! I got my internship from someone telling me to reach out to their boss.

Do you have a specific favorite Theta memory?

One of my favorite memories is coming to Theta on bid day and being greeted by Ally, Maddie and Malcia, three girls from my high school. I have always looked up to them and the things they have done at Kirkwood as well as Mizzou.
